There’s nothing like having the freshness and possibility of a new year right before you, and imagining what you can do with another 365 days. Being the daydreamer that I am, it’s no surprise that I concoct a fresh list of goals and ideas right before each new year begins.
I love this practice, and even make some joint goals with my husband. At times, I do accidentally overextend myself, which is why this year I’m limiting myself to *just* 10 actionable goals. Setting myself up for overwhelm and discouragement is, after all, the best way to ensure I give up before I even start.
Without any further delay, below are all the goals I have set for 2020, big and small. It’s looking to be another busy and exciting year!
My 10 New Year’s Goals for 2020
#1 – Visit a New State
For how much I love to travel, I’ve only been to 17 out of 50 states. I know it’s about the journey, and we don’t need to see all 50 overnight, but I’d really like to work on continuing to grow this number. For 2020, I’d like to see at least one new state. It would be great if I could squeeze in one extra, but it’s probably not realistic for this year.
States that are still very high on my bucket list include:
- Massachusetts: I’d love to visit Boston and Salem. So much history!
- Georgia: Since I don’t count an overnight layover in Atlanta as an actual visit to Georgia, I’d really like to come back. Savannah has been a destination of interest to me for quite some time now.
- Washington: I’d like to experience those moody Seattle vibes that inspired grunge music, drink some coffee, and explore some wineries.
#2 – Visit a New Country
Visiting new countries is something I didn’t do much of until recent years, but now I’m addicted. It’s hard for me to do too much international travel, since my husband and I both have full time jobs with limited vacation time. We also have finite funds, and can only afford so many long haul flights a year. That being said, we hope to add at least one more country in 2020.
Countries that are very high on my bucket list:
- Greece: The sea, beautiful beaches, and ancient history are all calling my name.
- Argentina: Gorgeous landscapes, the opportunity to practice Spanish, the Mendoza wine region, and vibrant Buenos Aires are all very attractive to me.
- Norway: The cold weather countries of Scandinavia peak my interest for some reason, and I’ve been curious about Norway for quite some time. Particularly to chase those elusive auroras!
** This list is by no means all inclusive of my actual bucket list, but we’d be here all day if I tried to list them all.
#3 – Write One Blog Post Per Week
I fell a little short on this for 2019, but still got pretty close. I wrote 44 blog posts compared to just 29 in 2018. This year, I am shooting for 52 again, and I think I’ve got a realistic chance at success. I’m even starting the year ahead, with two blog posts (hopefully more by the time this posts) already scheduled.
#4 – Be Able to do Crow Pose
Crow is a yoga pose that requires lots of strength and stability – something I’ve lacked in recent years. However, I’ve recently gotten back into working out again, so who knows. Maybe I’ll figure out crow pose in 2020 if I keep it up.
#5 – Learn French
One of my lifelong personal goals has always been to learn a foreign language. In preparation for a French wedding last year, I got back into language learning again, and got farther than I honestly thought I could. Why stop the momentum now? Let’s see how much more French we can learn in 2020!
#6 – Read 12 Books
That’s right – the ol’ one book per month goal that I never reach. I’m making this a goal again though, because I do think it’s important to try to squeeze some reading into my life when I can.
#7 – Save $40k
This is a joint goal between my husband and I. Since we’ve been married, our savings goals have always been to spend on a project. For example, the first project was obliterating my student loans. Then it was to save for another house. Next, it was to remodel the kitchen in said house.
We are both ready to take a hiatus from projects, and build up some savings. We’ll look to save for any additional projects from there, as I’d really like to avoid using credit in the future.
#8 – Pay Off Car
I’ve only got about $3,500 left on my auto loan, and the scheduled monthly payments should be done after August. It’s always a great feeling to get rid of some debt!
#9 – Have 100 Posts On My Blog
I’m almost to 75 right now, so if I keep showing up every week as planned, I should be able to make it to 100 by the middle of the year. Hopefully I can keep that pace up!
#10 – Complete the Cleveland Brewery Passport
As mentioned in my 2019 goals update, my husband and I are more than halfway through our Cleveland Brewery passports, having made it to 18 out of 34 of them. We need to finish by June, so if we keep up a pace of a few more every month, we should be able to do this.
I have a feeling that when we get close to the end, we’ll try to knock out a bunch all at once. I know I am so ready to be done with this thing, and will be happy for a much-needed break from beer after this!!!

That about does it for my 2020 New Year’s Goals. Some are more out there than others, but I really do try to make achievable, actionable goals. I’d like to think I did a bit better with this than last year, actually! Keep a lookout for my updates throughout the year, and I wish you the best of luck with your own goals for 2020. Cheers to a bright, shiny New Year!
