2020 has been a year like no other. However, it is now coming to an end, and like years past, I’m giving an update on the goals I set for myself back in January. This is always a fun post that I like to share for curious minds and to keep myself accountable.
I also like the idea of coming back to these posts one day and seeing what I was up to at the time.
It’s crazy to think how differently 2020 ended from how it began. Like so many others, I had amazing plans lined up that were upended by the virus. Trips were cancelled, I worked remotely all year, and Aaron and I spent more time outdoors than ever.
It hasn’t been all bad, but just much different than I ever would have imagined. That said, I wasn’t ready to completely give up on all my goals, and tried to salvage what I could. Without further ado, I’ve given a quick update below on how that went.
New Year’s Goals for 2020
As a recap of previous updates, here are the goals I had already completed earlier this year:
- Save $40K: A goal several years in the making, we finally hit our desired emergency savings amount this year.
- Pay off car: The only debt we officially have left is our house! We do use credit cards to earn travel rewards, but pay our balance every month.
Then there are the goals that I completely abandoned in 2020, for one reason or another:
- Be able to do crow pose: While I made fitness a huge priority this year, it turns out that learning to do crow pose wasn’t that important to me. In fact, I barely did any yoga, favoring walks in the neighborhood and streaming Tone It Up workouts instead.
- Complete the Cleveland Brewery Passport: The closing of bars and restaurants in the spring ended this goal for Aaron and I. To be honest, I’ve drastically reduced all beer consumption in recent years, so it’s actually a relief to have this one off the list.
Status of My Remaining 2020 Goals
Visit a New State – DONE
We happily crossed Georgia off the list this year when we visited Savannah in October. This trip was originally scheduled for May, but I ended up cancelling it even though Georgia was open. It just felt too soon.
However, things lined up to be able to reschedule our Savannah trip for October, and we had the most wonderful weekend getaway in the Lowcountry.
Visit a New Country
We were supposed to go to Ireland in October, but sadly had to cancel. We were not able to visit any other new countries this year with rampant COVID and so many travel restrictions.
Write One Blog Post Per Week
I definitely fell off of keeping up with one blog post a week this fall. The drop off corresponded with my busiest time of year at work.
Plus, at that time Ohio and the rest of the country started seeing the most awful spike in COVID yet. Even though my blog was doing well, I couldn’t help but feel really demoralized by all the negative outside forces.
However, I don’t like when I get behind. I’ve recommitted to my one blog post per week goal. I have a whole list of great post ideas that I cannot wait to write!
Learn French
I’m so sad about this one, but I fell off learning French as well. I simply lost my drive. It was everything to get back into posting on my blog again, but I just haven’t found any leftover motivation lately to get back into French.
I truly have a passion for learning languages, though, so I will never actually give up on this goal. I am simply showing myself some grace during the craziness that 2020 has been.
Read 12 Books
Ah yes, the goal that I make every year, and never complete! However, I insist on making it because it still motivates me to read more books than I otherwise would have.
There are no changes since my last update, but the below is what I’ve read this year. I’ve starred my favorites.
- Big Magic*
- The War of Art
- Essentialism
- You Are a Badass (re-read)
- The Obstacle is the Way
- Everything is Figureoutable
- Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil*
Have 100 Posts on My Blog – DONE
I actually did accomplish this goal as of November! Onto the next 100 now…

All I can say is 2020 was… a special year. Back when quarantine started, I said I still wanted to extract any good I possibly could from this messy time. I believe I’ve done that, but I am definitely ready for some relaxation and calm as we prepare for 2021.
